    Solved.
    Imprting the configuration from a different hardware is not such a clean configuration.
    I have made a new configuration manually and all work perfectly.

    @sjeffrey:

    or alternatively does any one know of a better similar price appliance that will do the trick?

    Well, there is no "similar price appliance" that is faster than the ALIX.  If there was, nobody would buy the ALIX.  You'll have to spend more if you want better performance, and I would recommend so if you are going to be using a lot of VPN's.

    If small and fanless are primary concerns (ala ALIX), then you'll have to go up to an Atom board or something like this:
    http://www.netgate.com/product_info.php?cPath=60_85&products_id=659&osCsid=711837e0c197d75c5a4285a6566682c7

    If size doesn't matter, then any number of more powerful PC's would do the trick.  A Pentium III would be more than adequate.

    I have also seen this on dc-based NICs, they seem to just be a really, really, low-quality card. Switching to another brand of card is probably your best bet.

    Are you sure the Supermicro X7SPA-H has Realtek nics? According to Supermicro's website it says it has intel nics.

    For what I've read 10g nics aren't that well supported in 7.2.
    IIRC there was talk about a manual hack to support lagg, maybe for $$$ supportinfo@pfsense.org can help.

    Thanks.  I went with a SanDisk Ultra 2 as I heard good thing about them.  Local shops don't seem to carry the SLC chips around where I am so I'll be ordering online from now on.

    @wallabybob:

    Looks "normal".

    Your system has two Intel gigE NICs (called em0 and em1) and a Nvidia (motherboard?) NIC called nfe0.

    Do you think there is something wrong?

    no there is nothing wrong but a earlier issue was a little bit strange. I have the onboard nic which is a RTL one NOT listed in the device compatibility and a dual port Intel ethernet card Intel PRO 1000 MT which IS listed in hardware compatibility list. i was plugging the wan cable from the modem to the one port of my intel eth card (em0) and the other cable which goes to the gigabit switch to the other port of the intel gig eth card (em1). The problem was that when i plugged the wan cable on the intels port it couldn't get assigned an ip address from the ISP using DHCP. Plugged it on the onboard one and worked right away. i have to mention that even that my onboard controller is not listed in HCL it is recognised and works flawlessly.

    Thanks for the link.  I filled out the form, it'll probably be tomorrow some time before I get a reply back.  It would be nice if Kingston had RAM that would work as they're less expensive than Crucial.

    Thanks for all your help.  It'll probably be a couple of weeks before I order the VIA box as I'd like to sell off this Atom box first.

    Sorry for the long delay, I got frustrated with this device and put it away for a few weeks.

    Unfortunately it is not the clock.  I loaded the latest OpenWRT trunk build on it and set the clock, installed packages, and generally tested the device.  As far as I can tell the hardware is fine.  I also have a new 2GB SD card to remove any possible concerns over the microSD adapter or the SDHC card I had tried with previously.  The machine has not been unplugged since the OpenWRT install was running, I just rebooted it and ^C'd in to redboot to start the pfsense install, so the hardware clock has no reason to have lost its setting.

    I still can't flash pfsense1 and it still pukes when trying to mount the root, then stalling at the same t_delta messages as always.

    @fastcon68:

    You got to be picking up stray voltage in the case, that would explain the strange feeling.  Make sure the components in the case are grounded well.
    RC

    Check that your AC power connection is grounded and wired correctly - Live, neutral, ground all need to be there!  You can get AC outlet checkers for a few bucks - failing that, see if the symptoms change if you power it from a different AC wall outlet.  If there's a problem on the unit itself then it will be in the AC power adapter, not the motherboard.

    I've also used the Zoom 5xxx modems and though the newer ones were better, they used to have some weird quirks like not coming set for the proper default VCI/VPI and you had to set them up manually.

    We mainly use the external Westell 2100 modems, which could be found cheap in large quantities on eBay last I looked (which hasn't been recently)

    The Westell 2200 routers are also cheap and when not programmed with a username/password, work like a modem.
