thanks for the examples Khampol / messerchmidt. The possibility of other applications looks good - squid might help with the limited speed at our site especially. thanks also stephenw10 - I will check in with netgate. I might go for their support contract instead as a way of supproting them - not sure yet! cheers all

Yeah - WD Green drives are interesting to use. The ones I've had mounted in eSATA enclosures just keep running.  No problems at all. I've got 5.5 years and no errors on a pair in a fan cooled enclosure with a good power supply. However - They suck for anything other than archiving. But definitely not good as a boot drive.  I'd recommend SSD or small 7200RPM WD laptop drive. Seek rates will matter alot with squid.

Thank you for the information nzimmers - can you tell me what version of pfsense you are using? Are you able to reset it without any issues? I have read this topic https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=73518.0 and to be frank it scared me a bit. I am looking up for upgrading my dc2500cc pfsense with this but i'm not 100% sure the gigabyte will work as flawless as the intel board…

Really sorry my part of this took off in a different direction. My input to you would be to either get a netgate fw-7551 or a dual core atom board with QuickAssist, but you obviously have more experience with this than I do so I'm sure it's no help at all.

Try Voltcraft TCM 220 Digital Temperature Switching Module -30 to +70 °C. Has 2 channels with 2 probes. Has LCD, alarm treshold limits (too low and too high), local buzzer, serial port etc. http://www.conrad.com/ce/en/product/126609/Voltcraft-TCM-220-Digital-Temperature-Switching-Module-30-to-70-C Works with two AA batteries, their lifetime is 3 years+ (mine are running for 4 years now, no low battery signs). It's got a serial output, which can be simply polled from a PC. I wrote a Munin-plugin for this some time ago, works flawlessly in my room, one probe close to the floor, the other close to the ceilig, gaph plotting both: http://munin-monitoring.org/browser/munin-contrib/plugins/sensors/voltcraft_tcm220_ I also like that it has an LCD, so whenever I go down to the room I can check the current values just looking at it (switching between the channels is done with a push-button).

Today the i7 will be faster.  But in the future, likely in less than a year, you're gonna want the cores. Trust me.  ::) :-X

I have chosen an IGEL H710C thin client with 1GB RAM and 1GB SSD. Just added an Intel Pro 1000 PT Dual card (ouch, runs very hot)! The Via Nano runs in turbo mode at 1.6 GHz and provides crypto accelerartion (Via Padlock). This setup is easily able to max out my current connection (50Mbit/s) while cpu load stays well below 50%. So I am happy with this cheap, powerful and silent decision :)

You don't need to unlock the modem to use it with pfSense.

A thread with some cards reported to work with 2.2. Some intel cards might work, but AP mode is not supported. I've tried a dell card with atheros 9462 chip without much success (this is a combined wifi/BT card - don't get any of those). Now waiting for an ar9280 card to arrive, which should be well supported in FreeBSD 10.1. They can be found for 13 dollars on eBay.

@dpsi: Hey, I came across this system aswell but I passed once I saw that it did not have atleast 2 NICS. I found something similiar with dual intel NICS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856107095 Typically you want to use Intel over Realtek as they use less CPU interrupts which equate to better performance for the overall system and not just the network. I'm currently setting up another jetway, also with dual Intel NIC. It has a better CPU and is part of their longterm support program: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16856107148 Setup was a breeze, both hardware and software. The wireless card that comes with it doesn't work with FREEBSD though.

It's either something new or I go and buy a 2-port intel NIC and drop it into a Pentium D tower I have, although I am concerned about how much power its going to guzzle hence my aim for a newer processor with a lower TDP.

I just bought one of these: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/Atom/X10/A1SRM-LN7F-2758.cfm Reviewed here: http://www.servethehome.com/Server-detail/supermicro-a1srm-ln7f-2758-review-awesome/ I bought 16g ecc registered memory and an ocz vector 150 240gb ssd.  Nobody had msata that I liked. My intent is to put Gentoo 64-bit hardened on the bare metal as a minimal KVM host, and use PCI passthrough to one or more router VMs.  One will be pfSense at least as a trial, and if I get serious about it I will probably pay support.

Take a look also to C2558 board. C2558 has Intel QuickAssist Technology but not Intel Turbo Boost (C2550).
