No. If there is such a card compatible with FreeBSD it would be possible to add that support.

@wallabybob: I don't recall seeing any FreeBSD support for TI WLAN chips. Its a while since I looked at the state of Linux WLAN support but I think I've seen reports of no Linux driver for TI WLAN chips which would suggest programming documentation is probably pretty hard to get. Can you plug it into a system to see if its recognised? If its in a system it should be possible to dump the card's PCI configuration information which may enable me to identify it. sadly not as I don't feel like trying to disassemble either of my laptops to stick it in one of them and i don't have anything else that would take a mini-pci card.

Alternatively, some 42-44% of your memory is being wasted doing nothing ;) You shouldn't worry unless you're seeing all of your memory used, and swap space.  Up until that point you're just making use of the memory you spent money on.

No different from a full install, just select embedded kernel.

I have done that much. The module comes with freebsd so I haven't had to install it per-se, it's just not loaded by default. I think you've answered my question, though. There is no place, right now, within pfSense to define module loading that will persist through upgrades. Thanks.

In the meantime I'm going to backup my config, poweroff the machine then Unplug the Hard-drive then boot it off the livecd and see if i can use a USB stick to store the config as I think it's not actually the fans that are making all the noise but the HDD. Didn't work  :o changed the hdd for the other drive i had (40gb) at least its much quieter

Thanks for the reply. In answer to your question, yes, there are 2 USB ports hiding under the hole on the right. Yes as well to the question of a power supply being included. Sorry for not mentioning that. The nice thing about this setup is that it comes with 2 CF cards (one loaded with freedos for flashing the bios) and also 2 cases (red and black). I'll shoot you a PM as well.

It would probably be a good thing to file a FreeBSD problem report (PR) on this and hope it comes to the attention of John Baldwin. John used to work for Compaq/HP (and still does as far as I know) and has been quite attentive to issues like this in the past. You can lodge a FreeBSD problem report at http://www.freebsd.org/send-pr.html and use category kern for kernel problems.

Thought i would add that i have built my system now anyway, one of my main concerns was power, as I generally don't see the point in wasting in it for wasting sake, just so that i can say well if i ever need to push 500Mbps of traffic i can, because i wont ever have to do that. I built up the following system; Intel D945GCLF using a 1.6GHz atom processor 2GB DDR 2 533 On board 10/100 WAN Intel Pro GT 1000 LAN Small Cube case Now it uses 35w of power and sits nicely in the bottom shelf of my computer desk, rather than the probable 200W my main rig was using to power all the fans hardware.

Last bump… need to get rid of this.  $300 shipped?  That's nearly 50% off for what is essentially a new machine!

I read somewhere on the forum that one way could be to run vmstat -i. Run vmstat -i first then create some traffic that would use the crypto card if it was working and check with vmstat -i again and see if anything has changed for the crypto card.

My guess is site-to-site VPN connections.  At that speeds sounds like he wants to bridge to two large offices together. He may also be thinking about incorporating off-site backups into this VPN scheme. He maybe better off just splitting up the site-to-site VPN connections into channels.  This way he'll get the total throughput he wants and added bonus of backup network connection.

I would attempt this with instructions similar to these http://www.fsck.it/blog/?p=52 Just use pfsense instead of monowall.

Yeah they have good stuff. I know you're in .au, for those elsewhere they ship worldwide I believe. I know at least a couple of our pfSense support customers in the US buy hardware from them. Netgate also has the 1U WRAP/ALIX case they sell. One of their boxes they donated to us in my rack, first picture here: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,12975.msg71921.html#msg71921

They'll work fine with 1.2.1, actually better as the newer FreeBSD performs better.

My firewall has 1 x vr NIC, 1 x rl, 1 x ath and 1 x udav, I've been running some variant of pfSense 1.2.1 for some months now and can't recall ever seeing similar interrupt percentages to what you see. If you are curious to explore this issue further, perhaps you could  take the interfaces out of polling mode and give the shell command vmstat -i to see interrupt rates on  rl0 and rl2. Are these interfaces in promiscuous mode (possibly bridged with another interface)? Are they connected to a hub rather than a switch? Do you have something "new" happening causing more network traffic?
