Thanks for the advertisement, but the IDE-CF adapter has nothing whatever to do with the problem.  The BSD kernel fails to recognize the Seagate CF microdrive after the BIOS bootloader is finished.  (And I did try four different brands of IDE-CF adapter with identical results.) I think you must embed an Seagate IC , I use FreeBSD boot from CF too , It works well

I aslo want to add that the issue is inconsistent. all 3 interfaces may work for a 24 hour period, and then drop off. A more consistent situation is that when all are up, I will release one interface, when it renews it's address, it will show the no carrier message, then bounce back and forth from "up", to "no carrier". With default settings 'from scratch'  you should be able to do a "www.google.fr" from LAN (minimal input from you includes details for a WAN connection) in a couple of minuts. If this doesn't works, something must be wrong concerning the NIC ? (WAN NIC and LAN NIC aren't mixed up ?) When conection exists, import YOUR rules.

After a lot of testing and reinstalling finally I got pfsense installed on two machines with Hitachi hdds. In both of them I have turned off the 32-bit transfer in the BIOS and I have turned off the packet mode in the pfsense installation. Thanks for the help.

It's working fine now  :) I had to rename partitions in /etc/fstab  to point to /dev/ad0 and enable the console in advanced settings. As the stupid newbe I'm I installed the swap partition. Do I have to reinstall to make sure that I do not use it or could I just remove it from /etc/fstab? ???

@drweberdk: Well I'm sorry! The fact is; the installationpage dosn't say anything about pfSense being ment for WRAP/Soekris mainly. Maybe it should be explained more carefully on the webpage, if it's such a often asked question in here. There's a pretty obvious link on the download page (If you are not sure which version is right for you, visit this primer wiki.) that directs you to a list of the different builds and their differences.

I had a similar problem when I was setting up PFSense.  The way I was finally able to get it to work was to reset the box to default settings.  I had tinkered so much I was not sure what had been changed anymore.  Also when hooked up to live hosts real computers and networks the interfaces will allow you to get through.  For some reason setting up pfs in a live environment not a test environment worked for me.
