I got it up and going. Had to manually set GRUB when installing.

I think I found the issue, it looks like the virtual firewire interfaces were the problem, when I manually forced the interfaces to be fxp0 and fxp1 it looks like that fixes it. Yay! Thanks for the help

If you can't move the disk to a temporary machine with a console to do the installation, you could follow these guides to modify the ISO content, and generate a modified ISO, to be burned to a disk as usual or written to a USB flash drive:

You need a FreeBSD host machine to do this on, but I believe a liveCD would work.  AFAIK, you need to add or change a line:
comconsole_speed="57600"
in the /boot/loader.conf file on the ISO.  Not sure why it falls to 9600, since the loader man page indicates it should honor the existing speed:

comconsole_speed
      Defines the speed of the serial console (i386 and amd64 only).
      If the previous boot stage indicated that a serial console is
      in use then this variable is initialized to the current speed
      of the console serial port.  Otherwise it is set to 9600 unless
      this was overridden using the BOOT_COMCONSOLE_SPEED variable
      when loader was compiled.  Changes to the comconsole_speed
      variable take effect immediately.

ebay is a good place to start… Most Retail stores discontinue carrying the Microdrive because they are popular for been energy inefficient driving the batterys of devices like digital cameras down...

I ended up putting in an IDE HDD instead of the SATA drive and it seems to be working now.

Didn't produce any results with the pin-shortening, however as I can (did it today) connect to the D-link gateway via console with no problems, the cable and serial port is fine on the receiving computer.

I'm starting to get very amazed over how difficult this is, I have tried surely 20 different ways to solve this without any luck.

Perhaps your harddisk is in poor condition, lots of soft read errors and the retries are taking a long time.

Do you have a fairly new motherboard? If so, I suggest you try a recent snapshot build of pfSense 1.2.3. A number of people have found the hardware support in 1.2.3 is better. I have seen 1.2.3 boot promptly on a system on which 1.2.2 hung.

The embedded version is split into two paritions, one called pfSenseCfg, and in the folder "conf" there is a file called "trigger_initial_wizard" - deleting this file should make the wizard go away, as far as I know.

So… is there a way how I could assign the vlan where the ppp client is connecting to, gets a local IP address AND pppoe is able to use it, too?

Is therre no 'elegant' way, or do I have to assign the appropriate vlan interface simply another, second IP address?
