Same issue here, different hardware though. I upgraded to the latest snapshot hoping it would help, but after 2 days had another random restart.

Going to roll back to 2.1.5 for now.

I've used the report crash option every time it crashes, I don't know where that goes exactly though. I also don't have that kernel dump to paste here because it's already sent and deleted.

Yes ok, excellent point, hadn't thought of that. At some point I may try a VM set up, and see if I can learn anything about what I was doing wrong (it's clear now it was my setup somehow). But in any case I have a workable path forward now so.. onwards!

Not necessarily but if you have bad caps or a PSU with a shaky rail you can get some weird symptoms.
The fan just twitching like that is a sure sign of something attempting to come up and then immediately dropping out, the 12V rail perhaps.

The first talks about using a bridge to add wifi support, while the other avoids bridges all together.

Those are two COMPLETELY different things. The first is talking about bridging two pfSense interfaces in general, the second is about using an external wireless router not a wireless card, and there isn't even a second interface involved in that second page, so bridging is irrelevant. In that scenario the external wireless router is plugged into the LAN. The two pages are not related in any way.

The first page makes much more sense now.  I didn't read it as a WIFI card.  I interpreted it as an Ethernet port connected to a WIFI router.

Installed a fresh copy on the mSata , now I'm working on restoring all the setting.

If it's an install issue you may be able to upgrade to 2.2.X from 2.1.5 even if the 2.2 installer has some issue on your system.

The problem it works around has been fixed in 2.2.1 which is due out very soon.
You can add the line to /boot/loader.conf.local though if you want.
Running the 8.1 BIOS with ACPI enabled is best though.

It should be started with a shell cmd as I had got it working by following the posted fixes on 2.1.5 so will all those patches etc still be effective or do I need to clear out and start again. I had lcdproc and lcdproc dev on 215 as recommended somewhere but after the install only the dev package was reinstalled so I installed the standard package but it was no help I'm going to see if I can find the fix you mention in the docs and get back in a while.

Restore the full backup you made prior to upgrading
OR
Install fresh and then restore your config.xml backup

If you don't have a full backup or a config backup of your previous install then you're screwed.  If you are a paying support customer and have the AutoConfigBackup package installed, then you maybe able to restore based on that but I've never used AutoConfigBackup to restore a previous version's config file or if it's even possible.

Otherwise you can make a config.xml backup with package information removed (it's a checkbox) and then do a restore and manually add/configure your packages.
