I just built a device using the dq77kb board.  It is working very well.  I used an intel Celeron G550 and 120gb msata that I already had.  I also installed 8gb of ram. Kevin

That board will support those services and bandwidth but I wouldn't recommend buying it. The Atheros NIC is not supported by pfSense 2.1.3. The wifi is not supported either. See: https://forum.pfsense.org/index.php?topic=67456.0 Steve

If you plan on accessing that NAS over VPN, make sure you have enough CPU to handle AES at those speeds. Probably make sure you get AES-NI on the CPU, even if it isn't used yet, AES-NI should be getting support "soon".

1 Gbit/s fanless isn't hard (but also isn't necessarily cheap) if all you're trying to do is Firewall+NAT.  What are your requirements?

At the mountroot prompt, type ? to get the list of possible boot devices and then try booting off of the proper one. Guessing it'll be either ufs:/dev/da0s1a or ufs:/dev/da1s1a judging by the information on the screen.

Yes, it's a command line program but you can add it via the ShellCMD package to make it run at boot. There is some support for the LEDs in the LCD driver but it very limited, there's no good way of triggering it from the lcdproc client. Steve

I'm planning on getting a Supermicro A1SRM-2558F-B. It's fanless, has AES-NI, 4 of the latest intel NICs, and is fast enough to route Gigabit on each core. I think it only works with ECC ram so that might be an issue or good thing depending on if you already have ram.

I followed the config in this http://pfsensesetup.com/pfsense-load-balancing-part-one/ I had a 3G/4G router with a usb modem on there at first (testing) however now I just have a TP-Link TL-WR702N which I will use if our cable drops or if we use our data limit, this is configured for the AP from my phone! So I am using it as a manual failover! Yeah my guess is that it is Elastix not asking for a reconnection! I am going to be installing the above mentioned 3G/4G router at a clients site today! If I can't get Elastix to connect to the VSP they will still have phones as it has a pstn line unlike mine here….. It does however have existing firewall rules RDP etc.! Should I leave that as is or create the same rules on the second WAN or even create the rules as Floating Rules?

@firefox: How much memory should be put on the computer ? Which processor amd can be good or just Intel Thanks for the help Snort+Squid means "as much RAM as possible.  To be honest though, using squid will likely slow you down.  Squid is useful when you've got a bunch of users on a slow connection.  You don't have a slow connection. With a 1Gbit/s connection you will want a CPU with the fastest clock speed you can find.  An Intel i3-3240 is a good option, though an i5 would be a better one since those add AES-NI (not terribly useful now, will be under pfSense 2.2) and ship with 4 cores instead of 2 (useful with snort on multiple interfaces, squid, and multi-threaded pf in pfsense 2.2).

Hi flank, Thanks for the note, and the encouragement. After lots of futzing and cussing, I finally got pfsense to work on my old machine and successfully attached a wireless router set as an access point. I plan to let it run for a week or so to make sure it's stable, and then attempt to get a VPN client to work on it. That's a weekend exercise – and one I have to get right so I don't take my VPN-ready wireless router out of service too long.  Hopefully it's not too complicated to set up pfSense to do the VPN tunnel. This has been a HUGE learning experience.  I knew practically nothing about networking (and still don't to be honest) but it's pretty fascinating to tinker with this. And also a bit frustrating at times :) The media server project is on hold for later.  That's way too complicated, if even possible, to set it up on the same machine along with pfsense. Thanks again!

Not many people using NUCs and even fewer using miniPCIe NICs. There are threads here talking bo8ut both though. If I remember correctly there are miniPCIe NICs with dual Intel i350s. Those would be preferable. Are you committed to using the NUC? Steve Edit: Like this: http://www.jetway.com.tw/jw/ipcboard_view.asp?productid=873&proname=ADMPEIDLA
