Yeah, it was a problem in the wizard: https://rcs.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/repos/mainline/commits/6be90004d477bd74c5610ae341aae3ae9fcc9281 But I added some extra protection so that on future snapshots even people who have the 'bad' rules won't be harmed by it: https://rcs.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/repos/mainline/commits/06b3df52262764723289a3ac65c3a7c05a8a8f4c https://rcs.pfsense.org/projects/pfsense/repos/mainline/commits/7ec0e6e2f5206d750a6c00d598700836a57d056f

Word to the wise, with a series of squid packages, uninstall the main squid package last…... After running the PHP command per Jimp, I was able to access the package installer. Since lightsquid and squidguard were both still listed, I tried to uninstall them and they would stall during the uninstall. So I could not uninstall these packages. Figuring they rely on squid, they probably rely on squid to properly uninstall, so I installed squid. After this, I repaired the squidguard and repair lightsquid, after-which I could uninstall everything just fine (squid being the last thing to uninstall).

Thanks for the help! I guess I'll wait for 2.0 final before upgrading.

Good news then. Though I am curious what exactly about your old OpenVPN config made it bomb. Just removing the OpenVPN server config was enough to make it continue without problems, though replacing that section with one from a known-good config also bombed, so there may have been some other strange combination of factors going on there. Tossing the packages and starting over isn't a bad idea in that situation.

I've a similar problem, each time I update Pfsense packages start to reinstall, that's normal but the re-installation process takes more than one our for reinstall only one package (squid) I executed  "clear_subsystem_dirty('packagelock');" and reintall the same package manually (System: Package Manager: Install Package) and takes less than one minute.

On the bright side, the only thing it isn't protecting you against there is foot-shooting. The system normally switches into and out of read-only mode as needed to write the config and such. The read-only mode is mainly an extra safeguard, but most things should behave even without it, unless the user does something to write to the media. :-)

I got an ATOM D510 CPU (Supermicro X7SPA-HF) with a cable connection of 120/10. The CPU is running circles around my cable connection. CPU tops around at 25 - 35% when downloading at 15 MB/s. Using Intel LAN NIC's BTW and misc. packages such as SNORT with all rules enabled

You might try to force all the packages to reinstall again (Diagnostics > Backup/Restore, hit the button at the bottom). There should be some log output from Avahi in the system log, even when it is working.

@ScorchedHands: I changed the WAN from one interface to another.  For example, it was assigned to em0 and I changed it to em2. I have a recollection (it was at least a couple of months ago) that when I interchanged WAN and LAN interfaces through the console I also had to restart the web server before the change fully took effect. But its too long ago for me to be confident I remember it correctly. It might be worthwhile posting your other issue in a separate topic so it doesn't get lost.

The most common thing wrong with a 1.2.3 config that breaks on the way to 2.0 is, as mentioned earlier in this thread, international characters (umlaut, circumflex, and other diacritical marks). If you have access to the xmllint tool, the easiest way is to run it through there and see if any errors are kicked back.

So now 3 updates are made and with all updates its the same thing: only some packages are reinstalled, some not. Which ones get reinstalled, varies. Over all its a real mess. Having a remote console doesn't help much, it gets filled with "Bump shed buckets to 64 (was 0)", so even when i'm online not one message from any package is shown. At the system-log i see some packages get reinstalled, but not all. But i have some messages like this one appearing: kernel: pid 25893 (php), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) The "packages are being reinstalled…"-message never disappears. The "clear_subsystem_dirty('packagelock');" doesn't work. Only a reboot helps.

Thanks, Jim…the proper kernel was installed; however, ran into other problems and started a separate thread for that.
