Just had a modem swap to an Arris DG2470 and confirmed the above bug happens with it also - so I suspect it has something to do with PfSense or the underlying FreeBSD 10.x kernel.

But building a zero-cost repeater this way is fairly trivial, too.

I'm going out on limb when I say I think the consensus here is: define "zero-cost".

The hardware may cost you "nothing" (you already have it and it's doing nothing else for you) but the time to implement and more importantly, the time to debug/workaround/worry about hidden issues is not worth the time "cost" in my experience.  Even if you factor in the "learning" value of exploring the issues, it's cheaper to not do it at all.

I've done lots of "fun" little projects like this trying to get value add out of old hardware.
pfSense is an excellent piece of software that definitely works well with tons of older tech.
Unfortunately wireless is a different kettle of fish and the newer solutions are way cheaper and much more capable/effective than trying to resurrect something.

squid can be a pain, but you can probably get squid3 running, but best to dump squid2

Diagnostics - Backup/Restore - Clear package lock (or something like that).

So it didn't work. I removed and reinstalled the packages.  I also forgot i have nmap installed as well. Below is the error i got since reinstalling the packages. Any thoughts?

If you haven't yet registered your SG-2440, do so at https://pfsense.org/activate/ and you will get access to https://portal.pfsense.org where you can download the factory firmware for that device, which as cmb mentioned is labeled ADI.

Thanks - I had an SG-2440 that I ordered in May (I think it had 2.2.2 on it), and finally set up, and it had this issue.  I tried to upgrade it via the console (it was able to access the internet, but not serve its own GUI website), and it still had this issue (I think another post identified the missing gid "wheel" associated with the 503 website error)

After registering the S/N (and renewing my pfSense gold membership at the same time), I was able to download the "ADI" memory stick version and burn it to USB, then boot to that version, and run the initial configuration.
Thanks for building it with a mini USB console port, and the console-friendly installation. That was really handy in this instance, as I don't know if SSH would have worked, or worked as well for this sort of re-installation task.

i just reflashed the CF card using the image on pfsense site and copied the newer bios files in it and it booted fine, was able to upgrade a very old alix 2d3 to 0.99m without issues

Figured it out. It was being detected but the input text (…Up or ...down) just wasn't triggering for some reason.

Lol. Well if you run into trouble what I have is the new action technology with gigabit connections and wireless networks and ac.  The easy fix for this was to plug the Lan into the Wan port. Then I added the Wan port to the network setup.  Disabled the dhcp and let poses do it all and it works wonderfully

Look at firewall rules for each OPT interface.  The default "allow everything" rule is only put in place on the LAN interface.  Perhaps you haven't copied it to the OPT interfaces for the other vlans?  Check firewall logs.
