I think I'd pay $25 to not have to deal with ebay/paypal.  How fast are microdrives?

Hi, I have been with this tiny board for 2+ years now running FreeBSD 6.0 thru 7.0, and recently moved to 1.2.1/1.3 when pfsense incorporated newer kernel 6.3/7.0 respectively. Yes, the Marvell chips were a kind of headache while using FreeBSD but it's now supported officially and works just fine with the msk driver, however, I would recommend using the myk driver from Marvell themselves because it is much more stable than the one in the current kernel. You can of course need to rebuild and configure the pfsense kernel which won't load its default msk driver but myk driver. That's what I do now. One last note, if you decided to go with kernel's msk driver, don't forget to add the following line in your /boot/loader.conf; hw.msk.msi_disable="1" otherwise your Marvell will easily screwed up with the messages below even in light/moderate traffic… msk0: watchdog timeout msk0: link state changed to DOWN msk0: link state changed to UP msk0: watchdog timeout (missed Tx interrupts) -- recovering Hope this helps.

@linuxamp: I'm also looking for a VIA NAB board? Either VIA NAB 7410 or the 7500.  So far I'm only able to find them on special application wholesale sites, not for resale.  If you find a place where I can buy just one please share the info. If you want the VIA NAB 7500, I contacted e-itx and they have it. here is the link http://www.e-itx.com/via-nab-7500-15tlg.html This board looks  sweet, if we can find someone to test it in pfsense.

I'd say way more than enough power.  You want that much power, electricity, heat, noise? PFSense is not a UTM appliance, doesn't need a lot of power.  I've played with a lot of hardware and various *nix distros, I've come back to PFSense….because of QoS features.  I run it on one of my old IBM Thinkpad laptops, a mid-range P3.  Only 256 megs of RAM.  Onboad Intel NIC, I stuck in a Linksys PCMCIA NIC...she runs great.  5x users in the house..2 of which are VERY heavy users.  Plus I have an IPSec VPN tunnel to my office, do a lot of other VPNs to other clients.  8 meg connection.  Under the heaviest of loads on the network...I never got CPU utilization above 35%. Laptop..nice and small, quiet.

@AudiAddict: I can live with the fact that freebsd or pfsense does not support the quad core cpu's (4 cores) and use only 1 (still fast enough), but does pfsense work with 2x SAS hdisks configured in raid 1 with a SAS 6ir raid controller from dell. Anybody using pfsense in a corporate network and using recent hardware? Preferbly dell servers (1U) with dell controllers or raid? That is not correct.  pfSense and FreeBSD are definitely SMP aware and have no problem supporting and running on machines with multiple cpu's/cores.  pfsense will work fine on the Sas raid controller, but I prefer the Perc raid cards.  You will have to use a release version of 1.2 that is built on FreeBSD 6.3 as mentioned in this thread. Good luck and enjoy!

Right now, they all light on boot, then LED 1 stays on. They are controllable, but it requires a newer version of geode.c to be compiled into the kernel. There is an open feature request, see this thread: http://forum.pfsense.org/index.php/topic,10593.0.html

Hi there, I have an 8Gb Seagate microdrive that I wish to use in my PC based router. 1.2.1 boots and sees the drive and 99 will format and install to the drive but when I reboot it just sits there no boot loader nothing. I have read ALL the microdrive posts and the general consensus is don't bother with Seagates use Hitachi instead is that still the case? Although my problem looks boot block related. I tried 1.2 release but that just hangs during boot when it sees the drive going on about LBA this and zombie that. Cheers

Not quite sure what you want to do except for using pfSense in your setup. Are those two different sites with individual access to the internet on WAN? Sounds like a basic 3NICs setup with pfSense. WAN to WAN LAN to FileServers and OPT1 to WAP200 Where's your specific question/need?

Any news on this?  I think T1 support would be a significant addition to the features of PFSense.

@vito: Looking to see if anyone has used a dl120 g5, or dl160 g5 with PF 1.2 i only saw a few post on the forum for other Proliants and currently looking for the specs so i can check the free bsd hardware list. But, i wanted to check with other users to see if they have had any in the field. Thanks in advance. I am also interested in people's experiences with HP DL series servers running PFSense 1.2.  We are looking for inexpensive (relatively) hardware to run PFSense.  Something that we can buy a same-day/4 hour warranty support contract from the manufacture.  Pretty much anything but DELL.

ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff is the arp-broadcast-address. So it shouldnt be a problem if it is displayed as your IP broadcast-address. But it sounds a bit strange that you cannot communicate over this interface at that time.

Same here.  The current 1.3 wouldn't boot for me with the same error.  1.2.1 RC1 loaded just fine.

There are a number of USB ethernet adapters supported by FreeBSD and hence pfSense. I've been using a DM9601 based USB ethernet adapter as the WAN interface on my home gateway to the internet for a couple of weeks now and it seems to work fine. I use it for the WAN interface because its a USB 1.1 device (max speed 12Mbps) and my broadband seems to max out at a bit over 6Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. There are some USB 2.0 (max speed 480Mbps) ethernet adapters around which would probably be more suitable for use as "LAN" interfaces. From what I've read, adapters based on the ADM8515 are USB 2.0 capable but I suspect not yet supported by a FreeBSD driver. If I remember correctly, the axe driver supports at least one other USB 2.0 adapter. You should probably be working with the 1.2.1 RC versions of pfSense to get the most up to date hardware support. Unfortunately I've found there is at least one DM9601 based device which are not recognised by the udav driver in the 1.2.1 kits I've tried.

first thing that came to mind is running of the CF card….could be bad...But you see both machines do this and you also uplug the nics and it corrects it self. WOW I'm stumped on that one. Have you tryed booting from CD? Still need to unplug nics? If not reload you config and try again.

I'm going to assume you mean WAN by WLAN. I'm going to take another guess that your Modem is running nat. The first thing you need to do is use a different network for the LAN. If you WAN is on 192.168.1.x, then use 192.168.100.x or something- just don't use the same as the WAN. /* begin IP 101 digression The devices that are directly reachable from an interface are determined by the IP address and the subnet mask. If an interface is set to 192.168.1.1/24 it means that 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 are reachable from that interface. If the other interface is set to 192.168.1.2/24, then it will try to send traffic for 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.254 out THAT interface. Both interfaces think the same machines are connected to them- this makes the firewall insane and useless. end IP 101 digression*/ If you can get past this point, you might want to do a little more reading to see if you can turn off nat on the modem and get rid of the double-nat.
