Using a second storage device for a Squid cache is unsupported in the pfSense GUI but some users have done it. You need to format the device at the CLI and mount it. You can edit the fstab to mount it at boot but that may get overwritten at upgrade for example. You can choose the location for the Squid cache in the package so you can set it there once you have the additional storage mounted. Steve

Dear all, Thanks a lot for your replies. In the meantime I found the bug… it seems all HP Enterprise PCs (I'm using at home) make a strange (weak) noise as soon as ethernet cards are built in and transferring data. For testing I used various 1 to 4 port ethernet cards (I210-T1, I350-T2, I350-T4 variants) as well as the onboard NIC (Intel 82579LM). Whatever combination was used, there was a similar behaviour. So I did the same with a second HP Enterprise PC, same story. My conclusion for the moment is, that it seems normal for those HP PCs as none failed yet and that my ears are sensitive to this kind of weak noise ... by the way, the noise was much weaker than a typical whining dammaged chinese transformator (which you can hear from far). Well I really hope my hypothesis will hold for a loooong while  ;) Cheers chulio.

If you do choose to keep RAM disks, remember that you will lose everything saved to in on reboot. You can select scheduled writes to disk in the settings for certain things. This may or may not matter to you.

Although I closed the topic and fixed the problem with a windows saved backup image, I can only now say what the problem was and a big hole for others who may fall into it! The problem shows up as no LAN connection (red cross on network icon) or a slow to connect LAN. Sometimes the LAN will connect when Windows shows a yellow exclamation. The pfsense webgui works but there is no internet connection. The WAN connection on the dashboard can be in one of 2 states - WAN down red, or WAN up green but no remote IP address.  There is no problem with pfsense! Changing the pfsense configuration will drive you mad going around in circles!! During the pfsense learning and experimenting period many things will get tried and tested - DHCP, fixed IP, DHCP server IP pool range, DNS server local or remote changes.  During these changes Windows keeps remembering everything in its DNS cache and the cache isn't emptied after windows reboots. My backup recovery of windows solved my problem because the previous DNS cache wasn't full of junk. The answer is to use Wndows console to flush the local DNS. There are plenty of how tos, but this link has a nifty basic executeable you can plant on your desktop to flush frequently whilst setting up pfsense: https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/30136-dns-resolver-cache-flush-reset-windows.html

Creeping up to something bigger. I only have a Mivnnowboard Turbot that is 5V. Added to Port 4. No 12V POE adapters. I need to dig more. So Turbot only adds 6W to my load and I am under 10 percent of the total allowed with 4 boards. [image: poe.jpg] [image: poe.jpg_thumb] [image: poe2.jpg] [image: poe2.jpg_thumb]

Guess you missed the section on switch configuration in the article. Any managed switch will need configuration of vlan membership and vlan port settings for it to work.

Huawei are ending the models: Huawei ME909u-521 Huawei ME909u-523 Most suppliers will not be able to get them after the 31st December 2017, so if you're looking to deploy a few sites you'll need to look at another cellular modem.

Also check with ARK. I', not sure what PRO/1000 you have, but you can usually figure out what chips it's using. The Intel 82571EB chip (found on a few PRO/1000 PT dual port cards) is rated from 0 to 55 degrees celsius. (i.e. go to http://ark.intel.com/products/50494/Intel-PRO1000-PT-Dual-Port-Server-Adapter and there you'll find the controller for that card, click the controller link and you'll find the temperature rating). Some PCIe network cards have sensors that you can read, but I'm not sure how to do what with FreeBSD or what cards support it. T310i ethernet cars under linux show temperatures with lm-sensors, pfSense/FreeBSD may need something else.

@bobkoure: That's exactly the information I was looking for. We'll probably go with a couple of these, just didn't want to get gear that couldn't do what we needed (embarrassing! - nearly as bad as confusing Mb/s and Gb/s, but with more consequences). Glad I could help :)

Should be pretty standard. What are you installing to / booting from? What have you tried? Steve

Hmm, seems like your modem might not be doing auto-select quite as well as it reports. As a test I would try putting a passive switch in between the Nvidia NIC and the modem. I would recommend using a managed switch and VLANs over a USB NIC everytime anyway so that could be a solution. Steve

You may be better off configuring it as a PPP device if it has that option. pfSense will try to connect that after boot. Steve

To make a 1U Supermicro chassis quieter without the use of the stock (loud) radial fan, and have enough cooling (m³ air / hour airflow) you have 2 options. Option 1) Use 40x40x20mm Fan(s) from Sunon, partnr KD1204PKS2 , these have a flow of 13m³/hour @ 21dBA these are the quietest in 40x40x20mm dimensions you can find (i use these all the time in 1U firewalls). This type has no RPM reading (no yellow wire) and will always run at maximum. This type can be found in every electronic parts store or online and is cheap and good. or Option 2) Use Cooljag DEN-7 1U CPU Cooler #JACLL03C-0 https://www.coolerguys.com/collections/intel-lga-1150-1151-1155-1156/products/cooljag-den-7-1u-cpu-cooler-jacll03c-0 at lowest RPM setting in combination with the Sunon fan(s). The cooljag is more expensive, because this type comes with a copper heatsink. Grtz DeLorean

You could easily max out your connection on a celeron hence a 65watt processor is way energy inefficient. I'm not familiar with AMDs offerings but a 15watt intel i3 cpu would already be an overkill for a 150gb connection. I would try to get something a bit more efficient if I were you.

Hmm, even with no boot media you should be seeing the BIOS output. Assuming you have proven you serial terminal setup on that box previously it does sound like a hardware issue. Does it beep when powered on? Try swapping out the RAM if you can. Re-seat the CPU if it's been moved about at all. Remove the crypto card, it's unsupported anyway. Steve
