squidGuard gets called by squid on-demand so it isn't running if squid isn't busy.  Why does squid not start?  Anything in your System log?  Anything in /var/squid/logs/cache.log?

It's always been that way, where you have to either reboot or restart the squid service to get it to wake up.

But can you explain me what are these url_rewrite_children? The page I linked to pretty much explains it.  It is how many squidGuard processes are created to handle URL rewrites from squid.  If you only have 16 defined (the default), and you have a thousand users all web-browsing, it will queue them and be very slow.  If you have a lot of children, then you will need a powerful CPU and more RAM.

No idea but you could try reinstalling it and then uninstalling it.

Use the proxy in explicit mode vs transparent.. Then setup which users you want to use the proxy at the client.

In some posts I've read that, after an upgrade, sometimes the packages fails, so they must be reinstalled. Try that. n_n/

Likely the webserver is sending url's with absolute path's specified. So better would be if it would use relative url's.. If you cant change the website then to 'fix' it you would have to rewrite the body of the replied html page's.. Haproxy cannot do that, if Varnish can i don't know..

Squid in transparent mode has been acting weird for many months.  Use it in explicit mode with WPAD instead.

I confess to having seen the PC Engine 1D4 and its greater RAM, and therefore imagine it will fly the E2G software.  Loss of blacklists due to being stored on RAMD~/tmp remains a pest.  Shall rethink use of SquadGuard….. WRT the other minis, single LAN [which most appear to be] is problematic though with the USB not insurmountable given some modems have USB ports or at a pinch use an adpator. Mind you, with my VW Golf exploding last night, I am a little distracted so forgive me if I missed anything.  Still happy for suggestions etc… Oz

I think that this too has to deal with the mount option in /etc/fstab. Change 'sync' to 'nosync'. Save and then reboot the box. Also, as stated above use Squid3.
