Mini-PCI cards are usually used for applications that don't need a connection panel - typically wireless cards, which just need hooking up to an antenna. There are mini-PCI wired Ethernet cards out there, but they tend to be older units or relatively specialised products. I found an Intel based Gigabit card, but it's using the desktop 82541PI chip and not one of the server chips. It's also quite expensive.

Getting four PHYs and the connectors into the mini-PCI form factor might be quite tricky - let alone the actual Ethernet controller.

I realise that the vr driver in current pfSense 1.2 RCs doesn't support VLANs, but people are working on this. Is the use of tagged VLANs an acceptable alternative? Decent managed switches aren't as expensive as they once were.

The quad NIC that linitx.com are selling is Realtek based, which I wouldn't regard as in the same league as the Intel card cybrsrfr mentions. That Intel card is excellent, but somewhat pricey, particularly in Europe.

Assuming that one of the network interfaces you already have is VLAN capable, I would suggest getting hold of a switch that's capable of 802.1q VLANs, then use tagging to run multiple networks to your pfSense box over one port. Unless you need multiple interfaces for the bandwidth, or are paranoid about misconfiguring your switch, the availability of inexpensive switches that can use 802.1q VLANs means that there's not the need for multi port NICs that there once was. Similarly, using tagging means you need fewer switch ports.

There's something of an argument to connect WAN links to dedicated NICs, but I am quite comfortable putting multiple local networks over one NIC using tagging.

802.1q is easy to set up. There are a few simple rules when configuring. You can only run tagged to a network interface that's capable of tagged operation and is configured to expect tagged packets. You must remember to set the Primary VID to the correct VID (VLAN ID) for ports that run untagged (on many switches this isn't done automatically when you place the port in a particular VLAN for untagged operation).

If you're happy with a 24 port 10/100 plus 2 port 10/100/1000 switch, a suitable Layer 2 managed switch is inexpensive these days. 24 port Layer 2 managed Gigabit switches aren't as frightfully expensive as they once were, but you can't exactly call them cheap. I've got a ZyXEL GS-2024 24 port L2 managed Gigabit switch which is a fairly similar spec to a HP Procurve 2810-24, but at almost half the price.

If you can get away with using the network cards you already have, you can then use the PCI slot for wireless - or use an external wireless access point, which is my preferred solution. I have a 3Com 8760, which is a good unit (dual radio 802.11a and 802.11b/g, 802.3af Power over Ethernet powered, capable of tagged VLAN operation with the RADIUS server determining which VLAN you're connected to in WPA2-Enterprise mode, virtual APs so that you can offer different strength encryption for different devices). However, this carries a reasonably hefty price tag.

I realise that the original poster has purchased now. I've got a ZyXEL GS-2024, which seems to be working well for me. There's one small rough edge (when mirroring, the VLAN tagging options are those of the destination port, not the mirrored port, which is counter-intuitive and which I intend to report as a bug), but it still seems to be a good switch for the money. HP Procurve 2810-24 is almost certainly a great switch, but it's nearly twice the price of the ZyXEL for, as far as I can tell, a very similar specification.

I have a Netgear FSM726 that I've retired. Quite apart from it being a 24 port Fast plus 2 port Gigabit switch rather than the 24 port Gigabit switch asked for, it seems to behave badly under load. If I need more fast ports, I'll likely add a ZyXEL ES-2024PWR to the network (I could do with some PoE ports for PoE capable WLAN APs).

Thought I would respond here so everyone know how the hardware choice has worked out.  That 60 dollar VIA board is working great with those two dual Intel NICS I got off of Ebay.  It's quite the nasty low power pfsense build.  Used the embedded version on a SD card.  I would recommend this configuration, heartily.

First of all i want to apologize for my previous message, it was out of frustration and it got to me when the reply was get a real NIC card.
I really want to make pfsense work not because it's free, but because I want to prove that opensource can work in a production environment.

I should have changed out the cables, I didn't think of that, I'll do so this weekend and see if the errors go away.
Does anyone know if pfsense will be upgraded to the latest version for freebsd anytime soon?

    Regards,

    @willitwork:

I tried almost everything  (including what you said) but with no luck.
Yesterday I tried a new Sandisk 512MB CF and now it works like a charm.
I would like it to run on a 128Mb CF anyway to avoid wasting space (also because I
use the 512Mb CF with my canon camera ;) )

Hmmm - sounds like the 128-meg CF does not emulate IDE - some don't.

Try a new one (Sandisk is good).

Thank you for answering but this list is outdated and I am almost sure that if I use this card as WAN interface it would work. I found this card from atheros list - http://customerproducts.atheros.com/customerproducts/default.asp . What I don't know is if this card supports being AP. Has anyone any idea?

    EDIT: Bought it already.

EDIT2: Works like it has to (y). If somebody wants to buy this card then I had revision 1.1 and it is also Atheros based.

Well, from what I read it sounded like the ICH7 controller was supported, but it's not on the HCL….so does anyone have some suggestions on an inexpensive sata controller card that works with pfsense?  I have a couple adaptec 2410s that I just tried and they work fine, but I don't have enough for all 4 machines and these are a little over kill since I wasn't planning on running a raid.
    Thanks

Yes, I have been using the ones supplied. They have worked fine so far.
I bench tested this setup in our office. The temp was ~74'. I ran it there for about 2 weeks prior to deployment. So temp doesn't seam to be an issue.
