Great :) the 10G network switch out of the c7000 has 4 XFP's. Modem                          |                 –------    -Firewall-     |         |   |          |   DAS     -Server - Switch1 - Switch2-             |                                     |             ----------------------------- This way everything is on a 10GB backbone. Firewall - HP DL360 G4 ( Dual Xeon 3.6Ghz 8GB RAM 2x72GB U320 Drives Running RAID 1 ) Server - HP c7000 Blade Enclosure - Currently 2 x BL480c G6's - 2x Intel X5460 - QC 3.16GHz, 24GB DDR2 667MHz Fuly Buffered ECC SDRAM, 4x 72GB 10K SAS Drives DAS - HP MDS600 Switch 1 - HP ProCurve 3500al-24G-POE Switch 2 - HP Procurve 2910al-24G-POE Basicly I'm doing  some home reno's and ran a 60' 12 strand 9/125 Single mode fiber drop from attic to basement utility panel into a 24 port Wall mount fiber enclosure, from where there is a second 50' 12 strand 9/125 Single mode fiber drop from the utility panel to my office where the server is. The reason why this was done is for future expansion as FTTP ( Fiber To The Premisses ) is due to arrive in the next coming months in my neighborhood for gigabit internet connections. At this time i only have Switch 2, and might be buying a second one instead of the 3500

I have given up to install pfSense 2.0 on a system with the Intel board DH61WW. It looks as if the problem is the newer 82579V NIC, but it might also be s.th. else. Nevertheless, Fedora 16 installs almost without problems. The system freezes if the onboard NIC is active when starting the Fedora Live CD. After disabling it, installing the OS, and updating the system, the NIC can be activated again and then the system and the NIC work smoothly. There were too many patches to see which drivers and chipset related packages were updated. There is a short article on phoronix.com about FreeBSD on Sandy Burst systems, which seems to suggest not use Sandy Burst boards at the moment, although none of the problems described there seem to be relevant for my setup.

Old laptop or Nokia box from eBay doesn't fulfil the requirements: @torontob: No moving parts MUST be able to run pfSense and I do intend to run pfsense Not be an end of life product or hard to find as I might want to get few hundred of time over time. Not that I can think of anything else!  ::) Steve

With PCI-E type Intel NICs. If you use PCI, you will be limited by the PCI bus.

After digging a little further, the FreeBSD 8.2 man pages on ath() mention the AR5005VL specifically as not supported, so it's possible the AR5007G would similarly be unsupported assuming the chipset number indicates it's a derivative.  As far as I can tell, AR5007G support is through a separate driver in Linux, so it could very well be the case.  Just in case anyone else has this same thought/problem ;) It was just a card I had lying around and (incorrectly) assumed would work.  No big deal.  Thanks for the response :)

I think that, as asterix pointed out above, the point is that in fact a Core i3 system may in fact be very similar power consumtion to an Atom. Especially of the system is loaded. For example see: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/d510mo-intel-atom,2616-11.html And that is with the firs generatino i3. The newer Sandybridge chips are far more efficient. Steve Edit: Here are some interesting figures for the newer model: http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu/display/core-i3-2100t_11.html#sect0

How many interfaces do you need? What sort of through-put are you looking for? Does it need to be rack mounting? Steve Edit: Have you check the recommended vendors list, here?

Have a look at the Linux utility mode-switch to see if this modem is supported there yet and which command is required to switch it between mass-storage and modem mode. Unfortunately the FreeBSD equivalent utility, u3g, does not support as many devices and the version in pfSense is from FreeBSD 8.1 which is now quite old. It's likely that to get this card working you would have to: Find the correct mode switch command. Add the details to u3g. Recompile u3g against FreeBSD 8.1. Upload your new module to pfSense. It may be easier to just get a modem that is already supported!  ::) Steve

@dreamslacker: Are you using any other features like Bandwidth limiting and ACLs? The host processor on the RB250GS is extremely anemic (50MHz) and connects to the switch module via Fast Ethernet (100Mbit/s).  If you activate any of the features that requires processing, then your throughput will obviously drop to fast Ethernet in total. I don't believe so… I left all the other factory settings.. I will double check on this and post back.. Thx tk

squid is caching files on harddisk and on RAM. If squid filled up your RAM and you uninstalled squid then - as far as I know - squid is NOT cleaning your RAM. So it would make sense to reboot the machine. It would be interesting to kn ow if you are talking about RAM or harddisk. Further it would help us if you post your system specs (RAM). If you need assistance with squid configuration we need more information about the squid configuration (harddisk cache size, Memory cahce size, minimum/maximum object sizes). Often people which are using squid the first time are using to high values in squid cache management and overlorad their system.

The X520-series is based on the 82599 chip which I don't believe is supported under FreeBSD 8.1.  You can try compiling a driver from Intel if one is available.  You'd want to install FreeBSD on a separate box, compile the driver, then move it over.

Found it.  Both files were in a .tgz so I couldn't find them using normal searches. https://github.com/bsdperimeter/pfsense-tools/blob/master/patches/RELENG_8_1/if_axe.tgz It looks like it was updated on May 3rd, 2011, so newer than the two posts I made.

@wallabybob: @atamido: 1. Will pfSense recognize all the hardware? Probably. I don't have one of either of those systems. Sorry, I didn't mean "all".  I mostly just meant the chipset+NIC.  I'm not really concerned about the trackpad and SD card reader.  ;D @wallabybob: A better option would be use a VLAN capable switch (e.g. Mikrotik RB250GS for under US$40, there are plenty of more expensive options) to act as a "port multiplier": your single LAN port on the netbook can "fan out" to 4 (or more) ports on the VLAN capable switch. I'm still hoping to keep unmanaged switches and have the routing occur between NICs in the netbook.  (The AX88178 looks promising.)  But I may just have to go with a cheap managed switch to actually have a stable connection.

I can't get either watchguard x500 and x1000 to install to a hard drive.  I tired 4 different drives no luck.  cF is just about the only way to go unfortuately. RC
