Nevermind, found out how to set DMA to be off and that worked : After the installation, add the following line to /boot/loader.conf: If you have to disable DMA for your hard drive(s): hw.ata.ata_dma=0

No I have it set at defaults, connecting directly there is no problem.  I even came home and installed pfsense on my home machine to try it out and I get the same result.

    Fat32 definitely won't work on a floppy. Ubuntu's format utility: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ mkdosfs -c -f32 -v /dev/fd0 mkdosfs 2.11 (12 Mar 2005) Bad number of FATs : 32 Usage: mkdosfs [-A] [-c] [-C] [-v] [-I] [-l bad-block-file] [-b backup-boot-sector]       [-m boot-msg-file] [-n volume-name] [-i volume-id]       [-s sectors-per-cluster] [-S logical-sector-size] [-f number-of-FATs]       [-h hidden-sectors] [-F fat-size] [-r root-dir-entries] [-R reserved-sectors]       /dev/name [blocks]

if had a similar problem, trying to install 1.2 Beta-2 and after the installation bootloader always kept saying: can't find kernel, until I see, that the hd was connected to the second IDE channel. So I plugged the hd into the first IDE channel and voila, after a fresh install (config backuped) pfsense starts. Maybe you have the same problem. Try to connect the harddrive to Sata1

Hello just some info about my experiances. with linux there are issues with core 2 duos and ide devices, usually linux doesnt boot or doesnt detect the ide device. since linux is usually more up to date with hardware I would asume that bsd has some catch up to do before it works properly Try using a sata hard drive and an external usb cd rom drive
