Hi, I had a problem with my home network today, so I checked pfsense and discovered that suricata had blocked the wan ip. After some tests and triggering some suricata alerts, the wan ip was blocked. I restarted pfsense and ran some more tests, but the problem no longer occurred. I then checked the wan interface settings and indeed the ip list does not include the wan ip, both now that it's working and before, when it was blocked. I'm using pfsense 2.8.0 and suricata 7.0.8_2. I use PPPoE to access the Internet.

@Leon-Straathof Data retention settings are handled inside of ntopng. Documentation here. Pay attention to the RRD note. Also, if you've turned on some of the slice and dice time series information (is off by default), I'd suggest turning them back off. These balloon the storage requirements and are of little actual use.

@tinfoilmatt said in Failed or invalid Mime Type: [application/SIMH-tape-data|0]: (ASN data is IPinfo, not Maxmind) Thats correct but "GeoLite2-Country" is from Maxmind ... (that confused me) I'm considering simply adding "application/SIMH-tape-data" to the list to test. Thats what i tought too ... I'll try when I have the time for it ... Edit: I can confirm - adding "application/SIMH-tape-data" to the list at line 257 in /usr/local/pkg/pfblockerng/pfblockerng.inc did the trick - no more error! Edit: OK, problem resolved but I would like to know, whats the cause for that error! (SIMH-tape-data sounds like a "blast from the past" ...) Thanks a lot!

@jhg said in NUT fails to start after 2.7.2 -> 2.8.0 upgrade: Interesting. I would have thought the initial reboot, which occurred as part of the upgrade, would have done the trick, but it took a second reboot, just now, to get things working. Glad you have it sorted. There was no difference in the output of usbconfig show_ifdrv at any point -- before or after unplugging/replugging the USB cable, nor after rebooting. ... Question: What would tell me whether or not a driver was loaded? If there were an attached driver, it should have shown up with the show_ifdrv command. If you use the command and look at the other usb devices, I think they will show attached drivers. I don't expect to see a driver attached to the ups, because there is a quirk that tells the OS to ignore that device (and not attach a driver). Look for idVendor and idProduct in the above output. The Vendor ID for your device is 0764, which corresponds to Cyber Power Systems, and the Product ID for your device is 0601, which is registered as "PR1500LCDRT2U UPS" (don't sweat an exact match for the name). You can see the quirk with the following command: [25.07-RC][root@fw]/root: usbconfig dump_device_quirks | grep 0764 VID=0x0764 PID=0x0005 REVLO=0x0000 REVHI=0xffff QUIRK=UQ_HID_IGNORE VID=0x0764 PID=0x0501 REVLO=0x0000 REVHI=0xffff QUIRK=UQ_HID_IGNORE VID=0x0764 PID=0x0601 REVLO=0x0000 REVHI=0xffff QUIRK=UQ_HID_IGNORE [25.07-RC][root@fw]/root: Your device is third on the list. The HID_IGNORE quirk says to ignore the device and not attach a driver. @jhg said in NUT fails to start after 2.7.2 -> 2.8.0 upgrade: You might consider adding this resolution to the release notes for 2.8. LOL... sorry, I don't have input to the release notes (I don't work here). While I wrote and maintain various packages, including NUT, I'm still just a volunteer. Most packages are actually written by volunteers.

@rosskan In theory, when you tunnel a 'VPN1' over another 'VPN2', VPN2 will see the originating IP as the one belonging to VPN1, not your real WAN IP. So far, ok. That said, when you subscribed to VPN1 and VPN2, you probably used your ISP IPv4 ^^ You installed the VPN1 (or2) application on your crappy laptop ?, if so, 'forget about it' ^^ 'as they know', the app is at an end point, and can see 'everything'. Don't forget that you pay for your VPN subscription, but you give them more then your money. They can see and use your data connection for 'data mining'. And they will make use of that data - by selling it. Why ? Because the share holders want a good financial result. If you need to connect two (your !) networks (or sites) together, use your own VPN solution. Don't use a commercial company. For example, take the ones you got with pfSense. If you really need to use that public network (aka : the Internet) to contact public servers, you are aware that the connection is already encrypted end-to-end ? That's what https is all about. 'http' doesn't really exist anymore / shouldn't be used. Also, you need to take other steps to be safe : you really should start with removing "windows 10" out of the equitation .... @rosskan said in What information can vpn provider see when I use wireguard?: does wireguard share the mac address of the ethernet port of the crappy laptop with vpn provider #2? MAC addresses travel on a local segment. Your laptop's MAC doesn't travel any further then the first hop, this is most probably your first router (gateway) like pfSense. Packet capture your traffic to check this. The Ethernet headers are not encrypted.

I just ran into another FreeRadius question, an found this : clog /var/log/system.log | grep "FreeRADIUS: User" Run it yourself on your system. Console access or SSH, option 8. Now, when user logs in, you have it's user name, right ?! Let say, the user is called "107" What about this : clog /var/log/system.log | grep "FreeRADIUS: User 107" Now, take the last line : clog /var/log/system.log | grep "FreeRADIUS: User 107" clog /var/log/system.log | grep "FreeRADIUS: User" | tail -1 My idea is : when you make your own portal login page and portal error page (the page where the red error shows teh somewhat misleading : ""invalid credential"") Edit this error page, and add some PHP code that executes these shell commands - and if there is some result (read : useful messages). Show the result on the error page ! Something like : User x has reached the daily amount of upload and download traffic (124 MB of 8 MB). The login request was denied. Now, all you need to do is scripting this together using some PHP and the commands you found above, and put it into the captive portal error page.

This is not all that uncommon. The Snort portscan preprocessor is very "trigger happy" ... . Go to the PREPROCESSORS tab for the impacted Snort interface and set the Sensitivity drop-down selector to Low. Save the change and restart Snort on the interface. That should help. If the Sensitivity setting is already Low, then you will probably have to disable that particular rule. Click the red X under the SID column on the ALERTS tab to disable it.

Look in the firewall's system log around the time you suspect Suricata crashed. Odds are you will find a Signal 10 Bus Error. This is the result of an unaligned access to memory. It is a problem in Snort, Suricata and clamAV as a minimum on ARM hardware such as the SG-3100. I've tried a fix for Snort and Suricata. The Suricata fix was successful for a time, but not anymore. The issue is complicated to explain, but if you Google "unaligned memory access" you will find some info on what that is. This is only a problem on ARM hardware. Intel CPUs are immune as they will "auto-fixup" instructions that attempt unaligned access. I looked into this in some detail and found that the main problem in FreeBSD is with the llvm compiler used to create armv6/armv7 binary code. That compiler chooses at times to use an ARM instruction pair that does not support unaligned access. The compiler could choose to use a different pair of instructions to accomplish the same thing, and that different pair will support unaligned access via "auto-fixup" just like Intel CPUs. While it is technically true the issue lies within the C programming code of the binary packages that are failing on ARM hardware, the practical implication is that since the code works on Intel hardware without issue -- and because the ARM hardware base is very small -- the upstream projects for Snort, Suricata, clamAV and others have no great desire to invest the energy and effort required to find the bugs in the C code and fix them. I worked with the pfSense team and we turned off compiler optimizations for these packages. It worked initially for Suricata, but now some change has crept into the upstream project and that change is causing unaligned access issues again on ARM hardware. The problem will appear as a random bug because it takes a particular sequence of data and the resulting program code flow while processing that data to hit the instruction that attempts the unaligned memory access. When the unaligned access occurs, that triggers a CPU hardware interrupt fault and the OS shuts down the application (and logs the Signal 10 bus error).

Your going to have to actually give some details to work with here people! Where are you forwarding too? What does a query direct to that look like from your client as far as time.. On further thought, I think I understand why it won't work... Openvpn is connected to the wan and traffic from openvpn unless going to the lan, like dns, isn't going through the lan interface. So it is technically monitoring the data correctly for the interface it just isn't able to do what I want it to do.

    I did change the Backup Count to 0 but it didn't help! When I edit/create a rule it actually creates the backup first and then removes it according to the backup count 0. After setting Backup Count to 0 : #ls -l total 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6 Apr 30 22:36 backup.cache While creating a NAT rule: #ls -l total 3236 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6 Apr 30 22:36 backup.cache -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 3252224 Apr 30 22:36 config-1556647551.xml #ls -l total 4324 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6 Apr 30 22:36 backup.cache -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 4390912 Apr 30 22:36 config-1556647551.xml #ls -l total 7044 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6 Apr 30 22:36 backup.cache -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 7176192 Apr 30 22:37 config-1556647551.xml #ls -l total 8100 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 173 Apr 30 22:37 backup.cache -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 8255935 Apr 30 22:37 config-1556647551.xml #ls -l total 4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6 Apr 30 22:37 backup.cache So, it still takes a minute or so to create/modify a rule!!!

No. pfSense is a firewall, not a development platform. Compile the code on a similar FreeBSD system and then copy the binaries to the firewall.
