Netgate is an awesome company. They stand behind their products. full stop. I get a lot of value out of my little netgate 4860 appliance and will continue to do so for years to come. Thank-you.

    Hi everyone

Was hoping someone has some ideas on how to trouble shoot my issues.

Currently the SG-3100 is an expensive lemon, unable to connect to a PPPOE connection with any kind performance.

Do I need to put an external router between my internet connection and the box. Which feels crazy!

    regards

    Murray

@stephenw10 said in How to register more than 1 appliance?:

We have removed the need to register the hardware since most of the resources are now publicly available. If you need a restore image just open a ticket at go.netgate.com and we will come straight back to you.

    Ok, cool. Thanks Steve!

@gob said in What happens when power restored?:

    Hi

I have a couple of Netgate SG-4860 appliances set up as a HA pair in a remote overseas office.

These don't happen to be the rack-mount 1U model of the SG-4860, right? You do mention HA pair, and I thought those were only the rack mount models.

I've got one of those rack mount units, and on the back side, there is definitely a power switch and what I'm assuming is a reset/reboot button. I think mine does, in fact, reboot after a complete power outage (after the UPS battery runs out of juice), but I'm not too sure.

Here's a pretty good SG-3100 video review, with a teardown and speedtests:

This sucks. I've had 40% (4 of 10) of my VK-T40E's fail so far. My friend's SG-2220 just died too. All of the sub $1K hardware seems to have a low MTBF.

Prob be a good idea for them to make that "Create an account and manage your tickets online" a link to creating an account ;) Or even just replace that Sign up at the top with a button..

Looking through more comments on that PR, it looks like for some people still seeing the issue it was actually a clock/timekeeping problem and not a bug. Maybe it hasn't hit pfSense because nobody is using that specific hardware or setup that had the clock issue.

On paper that makes sense. In the real world, it doesn't. People still unplug equipment. They see an outlet and yank out whatever's in it so they can charge their iPhone. 😕 They don't care if that plug is attached to a huge important-looking box with LEDs and a big battery icon—they gotta check their Instagram!

So, it's still best to have a layered approach. Since installing ZFS on our firewalls that support it, I've not had a single issue with filesystem corruption. With UFS it was happening everty couple of months at some locations.

@jimp said in SG-3100, Wi-Fi options or not?:

I would say it's technically possible in a pinch, but a firewall case is generally a bad place to put a radio.

Say no more. If you say it's not a great idea, that's enough for me! I'll stick to the tried and true. But, I still cross my fingers and hope that one day there will be a decent option here. If not for the cost savings, then simply for the smaller footprint and less things to stick on the wall...

Thanks for that Derelict. I guess I will just have to wait until the new server arrives and see what happens then. Appreciate your help.

I thought this issue had resolved itself but looks like I was wrong. Just had another unexpected reboot. Nothing in the logs and nothing captured via serial console messages.

    Re: SG-3100 GUI Broken
Thanks @JeGr and @jimp for the suggestions. Looks like I had been on 2.4.3 prior to installing pfBlock. Ended up doing the recovery, back running again.
